Talk about Fantasy Football for the average guy or in old terms, water cooler talk

12/12/23

This blog is for the average Fantasy Football player... who can't talk about their "stuff" with their spouse/employer/people who don't play or don't care about it.  We are on an island to ourselves.  "Hey, Skipper!"  Or maybe it's just me.

This is not intended for the "so called" "football gurus" who like to peddle their picks for the week. They get paid for their garbage.  I don't, but I will take sponsorship money, or at least a real jersey.

This isn't about spelling or grammar, although most of the stuff I read, hasn't been proof read. (Slam)  It's not exactly kid friendly, as there may be a few "choice" words every now and then. And in case you were looking for coherent classic literature, sorry, that would be your local library, if you still have one.  The material here, is and can be all over the map and maybe a little schizophrenic.  Now how did I spell that word correctly, the first time, without googling it?  Sorry people, this is a different kind of therapy.

I know it seems odd to start this near the end of the season with playoffs starting and all that, but it just hit me this morning.  "Who do I have to talk about my Fantasy Football with?"  Right now, I'm talking to myself, so have me committed!

Let's start with an example.  How'd your teams do this week?

I have 7 Fantasy football teams of which I am the Commissioner of 6.  I lost out on my 1 Dynasty league thanks to Miami not being able to get or kick another field goal.  The team I lost to, won the Championship.

I'm hurting because I went all in, in 4 leagues by picking Justin Herbert as my QB.  Luckily, in 3 of those, I was able to pick up Matt Stafford this week.

Did you start off the year thinking you drafted the best team?  And now, you're going, "What the CRAP?"  Did you do like I did and pick Garrett Wilson, Chris Godwin, Calvin Ridley, who for one reason or the other, haven't lived up to the hype?  Buffalo,  KC?  Well, Buffalo did bring it on in the end.

What killed it this year?  The schedule? The injuries?  The bye weeks?  Since I have been playing Fantasy football (2008), I can't recall a more difficult year.

Maybe not my year, or have my league mates caught on to my strategies?  It seems that way in one of my leagues, and I'm getting killed and out-picked each week.  "Poacher" and you know who you are.  I'll request you change your team name to it next year, Champ.

Are you in a league where you'd like to make trades but nobody will trade with you?  Raise your hand.  You in the back, sit down.  We know what kind of ridiculous trade you want to propose.  Zeke Elliott for McCaffrey.  Moron.  Go back in the closet and smoke your sh*t.

Really?  Sorry, I didn't watch the game, (glad there was another game on besides that one), but how did GB lose to the freaking Giants?  Thanks for getting me eliminated.  How's my Atlanta over Carolina pick going to do this week?

I hear them now.  Who's picking whom in the 2024 NFL draft?  Right now, I don't give a flying "F!"

I am not looking for pity and you shouldn't be either.  Fantasy football is A Crap Shoot!  Sometimes we get lucky and win 4 league Championships, like last year, and others we lose it all, like this year.

Unlike last year, where I had co-workers to talk with; it's been difficult being unemployed for many months.

So, join in if you just want to listen, or contribute. Don't hold it against me if I slam someone like a certain Smith guy or Bayless guy.  Would someone please make Pat McAffee wear some shirts with sleeves???  And I know you're the Champs, but until you can quit all the "fan fare" and commercial time with Jake from State Farm, and get back to playing football, and draft some WR's, I'm not seeing it for KC.  OK, so I was wrong.

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL...

Raiders vs. The Turnover Chargers

 What Am I Watching???

Charger's owner soon to have a bonfire?

12/17/23

Cowboys... what the HELL was that???   Same ole Cowboys...not much new has changed.  At least with Dak stinking, gives me a chance to win in a couple of my fantasy leagues.  More on that in a bit.  Stay tuned.

12/24/23

Well, here we go with an important weekend of the fantasy football playoffs.

So where do I stand?

Let's start off with where I don't.  I lost out in my dynasty league in the first round.  Would have been okay if Patrick would have had another one of his stellar years, but oh well. Not sure if I'll have him as keeper for next year.

In my newly formed league, I won the first round game but projections for the second round game are not very promising, projecting to lose by 23 points.

In my ESPN league, I'm in the championship bracket at #2 with a double elimination, I'm already 100 points in the hole.  Guess I'll be playing for the consolation trophy next week.

In one of NFL leagues, I lost out last week, putting me in the losers bracket.

That leaves me with 3 teams still with a chance for championship.  Won both opening games in Yahoo and one in the other NFL league.

12/26/23

Well, what a surprise that I found last night or should I say earlier this morning....it's never over 'til it's over.

I found that in my dynasty league...the team that beat me, in the first round, by less than a field goal, is actually going to the championship game.  To top that, my team would have high score this week in this same league, so I don't feel so bad.

I went 5-1 this week.  Too bad, the loss was one of my championship potential teams.  My fault. I swapped Montgomery for Achane.  Had I not, I would have won.  I was going for high upside not counting on Jeff Wilson Jr. getting Achane's carries.

As predicted, I won the game in ESPN, but still lost the match.  Wild and wacky... as the #2 team I get to face the #1 team for the consolation trophy, over the next 2 weeks.  The #3 & #4 teams play for the championship.

I won both of my semi-final games in Yahoo and play in the championship game this weekend.  The problem is that I don't have a lot of favorable match ups like I did this past weekend.  Not sure if I can count on the gun-slinging Flacco this time to air me to a victory.

Did Baltimore eat Purdy's lunch or what?

Now for the big reveal.  In what I thought sure was a loss, became a win thanks to the aforementioned lunch stealing.  In my Fantrax league, I barely advanced last week as a #7 seed with a 6-8 record.  This week, I faced the 9-5 #2 seed.  In what was sure to a be lop-sided loss, actually turned into a win by 4.4 points.  I lost to this same team back in week 3 by 4 points.                                                                                       Stranger still, all 4 top seeded teams lost this weekend, by relatively close margins, except for one.  The top seeded team lost by 1.4 points.  Ouch!

1/1/24

Well Shit, Earl!  No championship(s) for me this year.  Had good players but bad match ups.

A big shout out to the Arizona Cardinals for beating the Dirty Birds yesterday.  Thanks for the present.  Thanks Jerry for not firing McCarthy mid-season.

1/9/24

I don't blame Goodson for not catching the ball.  Minshew should have thrown a better pass instead of baby arming it.

So... here's how I did this last year.

In my 1st Yahoo league... I went 10-7 and lost in the championship.

In my 2nd Yahoo league... I went 12-5 and lost in the championship.

In my ESPN league... I went 11-6 and won the 3rd place consolation game.

In my Fantrax league... I went 8-9 and finished tied for 3rd place.

In my 1st NFL league... I went 9-7 and finished in 5th place.

In my 2nd NFL league... I went 11-5 and finished in 3rd place.

In my Keeper League... I went 5-9 and finished in 9th place.

Normally, I would be upset but it was a tough year for fantasy football.  With all the injuries, draft busts, and NFL scheduling, it made it really tough to be consistent, even for someone like me who has been playing for over 15 years in one capacity or another.  Usually, I win at least 1 Championship a year.  I guess 4 last year was too many.  I guess I'll have to double down and do more research and mock drafting.

I get probably 4 emails almost daily from some NFL, let's call them sports writers.  I do pay pretty particular interest in match ups and weekly projections, but some of those stats they put out there, I really couldn't give a hill of beans about.  In in particular... "air yards."  Do I know what it means?  Yes, but it doesn't mean shit if the QB can't throw the ball right or the receiver can't catch the "damn" ball.  Are you telling me you can't those air yards when a QB sails one out of bounce?

I'm running a post-season league for the playoffs now.  It's a points based multi team pick'em contest.  We'll see how that goes.  I got snookered by one guy who is going to win it.  Let's just say, he won't be invited next year.

I'm debating on whether to share this blog with my other 6 leagues.  Then again, I'm tired of talking to myself.  I did share on my profile on X but apparently no one has seen it.  What do all my "hotties" on there care about fantasy football?

1/15/24

Sowboys!  What was that mess, yesterday?

Fire the GM, the head coach, and the quarterback!  Time to go back to practicing on dirt.

1/22/24

The NFL division finals are set. KC vs. Baltimore and Detroit vs. SF.

Kind of what I expected from the Ravens.  Houston will be a contender next year, just need some interior defensive run stopping lineman. Still impressed with how far Houston developed this year.

I'm not a GB fan, but for once I was routing for them.  They almost won the game.  Had it been Dallas playing, I don't think SF would have won.

Glad to see Detroit win.  Mayfield is who he is, mediocre.  Todd Bowels looked like he didn't want to be there.

What a heartbreak for Buffalo.  Looked great the first half, but took their foot off the gas and let KC come back on them and win.  Allen should have eaten another bowl of Wheaties at half time and kept running the ball the second half.  Offensive letdown or too conservative play calling?  You tell me.

Oh how I wanted KC to lose so we could quit this Mr. Travis Taylor show behind us.  Makes me want to puke every time I see them.

So, I'm routing for Baltimore and Detroit to make it to the Super Bowl.

1/30/24

Well so much for that crap!

And now on to more crap...

https://steadfastnation.com/ufc-veteran-paige-vanzant-claims-taylor-swift-and-travis-kelces-romance-as-100-fake-recounts-her-own-experience-with-nfl-player-video/

Hey, would you look at that.  I brought in some outside reading content.

I don't believe it either.  It's bullshit and anything for the NFL to make a buck and gain viewers.  I've had enough of Mr. Phiza/Mr. Taylor.  Good gimmick but it doesn't pass the bar for me.

2/7/24

One more game to the football season.  Then it's onto Daytona and the start of the Fantasy NASCAR season.

Super Bowl prediction:  KC 27  SF 24.

Bets on how many times they show Taylor?  I say 12 but I won't be counting and I don't give a damn.  I'd rather bet on a doink off the upright, or a wardrobe malfunction, this time - one I won't miss but probably.

And now a word from our sponsors.   "Crickets"

Wow, are they starting to get loud.  Kind of like my tinnitus.

2/17/24

So, I was close to the predicted score, and by the same margin.  I was really routing for SF just because of the Mr. Taylor crap, and because I like CMC as a much better valued athlete.

And now onto, in my personal opinion, The Real "Super Bowl," the Daytona 500.  I know in fantasy racing it's a CRAP SHOOT to try and predict a winner, but I actually prefer it over fantasy football.

Look ma, we have no off season as we go from one sport to the other.  However, I do find I get bored with racing about the time football starts up again.

We are no longer U.S. citizens... we're just Americans

I woke up this morning (not to Boston) with this stirring my brain:....where are we, and what have we become?  Have we traveled so far down the barrel that we are now facing the bullet?  Have we become so American that we have forgotten to be human?  Have we become so petty, that we cannot put our differences aside?

9-11 may have been one of our darkest hours but it was one of our finest moments, that we as a people could come together as human beings. We set aside just about everything, for a brief moment in time, to achieve a common goal.  We set aside race, gender, religion and yes, even political differences to mourn and then put our country back together again.

Is that what it's going to take for our country to come together again?  Is it going to take a national catastrophe for us to be woken up?  Earthquake, tsunami... no. What if Tom Brady can't play in the Super Bowl, or Beyonce couldn't entertain anymore... not very likely.  How about one of those Russian/Chinese EMP's that we keep hearing about... maybe?

How childish or bullheaded must we be, that we cannot even sit down and listen to what the other person has to say?  Now I sound like Dr. Phil.  Sincere apologies work, most of the time.

It's time to drop all the bullshit:  all the politcal differences, all the name calling, all the back stabbing, all the gender inequalities, all the racial divides, all the religious doctrinal meanings, and all the different classes of people.  It's time to set aside pride and be an actual human being, unlike a caveman.

It's time for the country to come together and stop growing apart.  It's time to settle all of these issues that have workable solutions.  It's time to stop trying to reinvent the wheel.  Air the damn thing up and let's move on.

One can only imagine what others think of us around the world.  Is someone getting a good laugh at our expense?  Who cares what others think?  Some people in this country do.

Until we can put our differences aside... we're not United States citizens.... we are plainly filthy Americans.

P.S.  I tried to write this in the most neutral frame of mind that I could.  Except for the mention of Tom Brady and Beyonce, both of which I don't care for, it was about as middle of the road of an opinion as I could make and that's not easy for me.  No, this was not about me doing any soul searching.  It is about our country having an identity crisis.

NFL TV Watching

Yeah, for once I don't have to watch NFC east teams play today in games on TV! Texans/Titans, Vikings/Packers, Patriots/Jaguars.

Living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area has a lot of perks to it.  When it comes to watching the NFL on TV, not so much.  It seems our local stations have some fixation on showing the games that NFC east teams are playing in.  Being a lifetime Cowboys' fan, I could care less about the Eagles, Redskins, or Giants and how their games are turning out.  If I have a fantasy player that I need to keep tabs on, I can do it through my fantasy football sites.

Last year, I wrote to one of the local stations about this and never really got a reply.

Sidebar:  I know your reaction.  "Well, get the NFL Sunday Ticket. Then you could watch whatever you want to watch and not have to watch those teams."

Sounds great if you can afford it but I think being able to watch 6 live games a week is enough, if not too much for me.

And yes, despite the "kneelers,"  I still watch and follow the NFL, but don't get me started on that topic.

And yes, I play fantasy football.  7 teams.

Thanks for the Championship but....

The truth is... not only for Cuban, but all MAV's fans is that Kidd is guilty of aiding and abetting, the luring away of D. Williams from the Mavs.  Inexcusable.  Had he not done his "broke back" retreat with Williams up in The Hamptons  playing golf.... Deron Williams would be a Mav.  Kidd had ulterior motives to play alongside Williams  but that backfired when the Nets didn't want him back and he had to settle for N.Y., about the time they knew they were going to lose Lin.  As for my thoughts on Kidd being a Mav;  I'm glad he's gone.  His age was becoming a liability that prevented the Mav's from getting younger and moving in a different direction.

My reply to:

Cuban: I'm not retiring Kidd's number

The way Jason Kidd left Dallas this offseason might have cost him getting his number retired. (Jerome Miron-US Presswire)

Don’t plan on attending a jersey-retiring ceremony for Jason Kidd at American Airlines Center any time soon. The former Dallas Mavericks point guard apparently burned some bridges with team owner Mark Cuban when Kidd decided not to re-sign and instead head to New York.

Cuban said Tuesday he thought Kidd was returning to the Mavericks before the veteran point guard changed his mind and agreed to sign with the Knicks.

"I was more than upset,” Cuban told the Ben and Skin show on 103.3 [KESN-FM]. "I thought he was coming (back). I was pissed."

That answer came after Cuban was asked if Kidd would have his jersey in the rafters one day at AAC. Cuban said there was “no chance” of that happening after the way things ended.

"J-Kidd’s a big boy, he can do whatever he wants,” Cuban said. “But you don’t change your mind like that. I’m sure I’ll get over it at some point, but as of right now, I wouldn’t put J-Kidd’s number in the rafters."

Kidd's take? "I totally understand his side," he said. "Does Mark understand my side?"

Cuban said Kidd called him before agreeing to the deal but Cuban didn’t answer because he “was in D.C. with my kids at a museum.”

“I like J-Kidd,” Cuban added. “He’s a good guy. But I just thought that was wrong. You can’t put a guy’s number in the rafters when he decides he doesn’t want to be there.”

Kidd still wouldn't mind making it there.

"I would be honored if I made the rafters there," Kidd told FOXSportsSouthwest.com.

Cuban said Jason Terry, who signed with the Boston Celtics this summer, has a shot at getting his number retired. So, how are the departures different?

"Jet was 100-percent honest and straightforward about everything,” Cuban said. “No problem with what Jet did whatsoever.”

Cuban concluded: “It hurt my feelings, period, because I thought that we had developed a relationship and I thought [Kidd] was committed to the organization. It sure seemed like he was. I mean, J-Kidd was active in going out there and talking to Deron Williams the whole time. I guess it was more shocking and surprising than anything else."

Mavericks Sweep

First off, my hat is off to Phil Jackson in being a classy guy and his respectful comments to the Dallas Mavericks.

Enough said for now... The Dallas Mavericks went out and took care of business. What they needed to do and did, took a whole team effort. Granted, the finish line is still far away and the trophy is still engraved with the Lakers' name on it, or it was until a little while ago. If the Mavericks can do what they did to the Lakers' in then next 2 series, barring any injuries, and stupid play resulting in suspensions, they will be the new NBA Champions.
